The NPP gives organisations the building blocks to create real-time data-rich payments, experiences and efficiencies that go beyond simple credit transfers. And there are many ways the platform's capabilities can be brought to life.
NPP payment messages can support more data, including up to 280 characters of structured or unstructured data. The ISO 20022 message schema captures and transmits this data in such a way that it can be customised for different payment types. Camt messages can be used to provide payment notifications, up-to-date account balances and statement information to customers, enabling continuous, automated payments processing. Talk to your financial institution to find out more about receiving ISO 20022 camt messages or APIs for NPP payments.

With the International Payments Service, participating financial institutions can process the final domestic leg of an inbound international payment via the NPP. The data richness of the underlying payment message enables the inclusion of additional data when processing an international payment, which is not possible using the Direct Entry and RTGS systems. Data such as the full legal account name of the sender and other identifiers can be carried from the country of origination through to the receiving bank in Australia, supporting full transposition of data without any truncation. This means participating financial institutions can perform necessary due diligence and meet AML/CTF compliance requirements, hence, enabling safer and faster processing of inbound international payments.
All NPP participating organisations are obliged to join the International Payments Service to receive the inbound international payments via the NPP. The mandatory compliance requirement to subscribe to the service is 1 December 2023 for Participants and 30 April 2024 for Identified Institutions.
The platform offers more than just speed for corporate payments that are currently processed as Direct Entry (DE) or bulk payments. Migrating payments to the NPP’s fast payment infrastructure supports more efficient working capital management, real-time data, a better customer experience and reduced manual handling and exceptions. APIs play an important role in enabling third parties to use the NPP’s capabilities. The platform API Framework defines the key technical approach and mandatory data attributes for NPP APIs, aligned to ISO 20022 standards.
QR Codes can be used to create seamless customer experiences. The platform QR Code Standard is based on the EMV Merchant-Presented QR Code Specification for Payment Systems and defines the mandatory elements required to help facilitate a consistent NPP payment experience using QR Codes. This document also illustrates how QR codes can be used for various scenarios such as e-commerce, invoices, terminals and P2P scenarios.
